Well, after Tom’s great effort to deliver to me a new Gamut DI-150 within a week, I have at my house and had an opportunity to compare it with my current favorite - Plinius Hiato. Before going to the actual compare, I have to note that I am a long time Plinius fan, having at some point of times almost all of their inventory except SA Reference amplifier. I tried to get something different to go off of Plinius road, but the positive aspects of the Plinus sound like musicality, natural timber of acoustical instrument and dynamics made me always to return to Plinius and my last one was Plinius Hiato.
When Tom told me that Gamut DI-150 will be better than Hiato, I was skeptical saying to my self I herd this before. After installing Gamut and powering it up, I could not wait and decided to check out.
I plugged my reference CD – Girl in the other room by Diana Krall and immediately (to my surprise) heard the positive difference – the Gamut (even unbroken) was more transparent and liquid with more air around players. Well for fare comparison, I decided to burn Gamut for at least around 100 hours with Isotek burn cd, because Plinius had around 400 hours behind it .
After 100 hours of continuous play, this is what I herd, and differences were obvious even to my not the best ears:
Most important was a blacker background coming from Gamut that resulted with less grain and increased transparency, cleaner timbres, and greater dimensionality. At the same time, sound was spooky dynamic with great timber and unbelievable details. The bass was less bloomy (that initially I took for lack of it) but more tight and natural. So I had no doubts that Gamut Di-150 will stay in my system and Plinius will go for sale. The rest of my system is Esoteric K-03 CD/SACD player and Sonus Faber Elipsa speakers.
Best regards,
Greg
